Abstract: Objective To evaluate the correlation between mean platelet volume (MPV) and carotid intima media thickness (IMT) and both of them for prediction of long-term cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension. Methods 415 patients with hypertensive were consecutively enrolled. IMT and MPV on baseline were measured and recorded. The patients were followed up for about 5 years and cardiovascular events was recorded. Results In these subjects, the value of MPV and IMT were respectively 11.98 ± 0.47fL and 0.89 ± 0.25mm. Correlation analysis showed that MPV was respectively and positively related with IMT,LDL-C and WBC(r=0.407,P<0.001; r=0.163,p=0.013;r=0.215,p<0.001 respectively). During a follow-up period of about 5 years, 86 cardiovascular events were recorded. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) analysis showed that AUC of MPV was 0.819(95%CI:0.768-0.870;P<0.001)and AUC of IMT was 0.872(95%CI:0.824-0.920;P<0.001) for predicting the long-term risk of cardiovascular events. Conclusion MPV positively associated with IMT. Both MPV and IMT could predict long-term cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension.
