Abstract: [Abstract]Objective〖HTSS〗To explore the risk factors of post-operative lateral femoral cutaneous nerve palsy(LFCNP) after shoulder surgery in the beach chair position.
Methods〖HTSS〗A retrospective analysis was conducted according to the medical records of 254 patients undergoing shoulder surgery in the beach chair. These patients were divided into LFCNP group(8 patients) and non-LFCNP group(246 patients) based on post-operative examination. The demographic data, American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA) physical status, pre-operative complication(hypertension, diabetes mellitus), anesthesia type, peri-operative transfusion, urine volume, blood loss, and surgical duration were collected. Univariate analysis and bivariate logistic regression were performed to account for association between post-operative LFCNP and independent risk factors.
Results〖HTSS〗Univariate analysis showed that the independent variables of LFCNP were body mass index(BMI) and surgical duration(P<0.05), but there was no significant difference of age, gender, height, weight, ASA physical status, pre-operative complication(hypertension, diabetes mellitus), anesthesia type, peri-operative transfusion, urine volume, blood loss between these two groups. In a bivariate Logistic regression model, BMI>28 and surgical duration >2 h were correlated with post-operative LFCNP.
Conclusion〖HTSS〗Our retrospective study suggested that BMI>28 and surgical duration >2 h were independent risk factors of post-operative LFCNP after shoulder surgery in the beach chair position.
